Individuals need to avoid sexual intercourse and tampons for at least 2 weeks after endometrial ablation, according to the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS).
However, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) notes that a person may want to discuss the exact timeframe with their OG-BYN. Some individuals may need to wait longer.
Individuals also need to avoid swimming and taking baths for at least 2 weeks after the procedure. During this time, they can take showers instead.
These measures help lower the risk of infection.
If a person experiences any of the following symptoms after the procedure, they need to contact a healthcare professional immediately:
- a fever of 38°C (100.4°F) or above
- worsening pain that does not improve with pain relief medication
- shortness of breath
- severe vomiting, in which a person cannot tolerate fluids
- bowel or bladder problems
- greenish or foul-smelling vaginal discharge
