The Identity and Access (I&A) management system allows healthcare professionals to access various other systems that help with billing, provider enrollment, and access to electronic medical records.

Medicare has various online tools that healthcare professionals and facilities can use for various reasons relating to a person’s care.

One of these online tools is the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS), which can help doctors and healthcare organizations enroll to participate in Medicare.

Once they have enrolled, they can securely access several online tools to submit new information and manage existing information electronically.

To access the tools in one place, healthcare organizations and professionals can use the Identity and Access Management (I&A) system. This replaces the need to access several different Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) systems that track Medicare enrollment and reimbursement.

With the I&A system, doctors and healthcare facilities can more easily complete Medicare enrollment tasks in one place using a single online login.

Using I&A, doctors and healthcare facilities can access:

  • PECOS: PECOS is Medicare’s online enrollment system for healthcare professionals and facilities. It stores all the necessary enrollment information submitted by healthcare professionals in one place.
  • The National Plan & Provider Enumeration System (NPPES): The NPPES database assigns national provider identifiers (NPIs) to healthcare providers and plans, which they need for billing purposes.
  • The Electronic Health Record (EHR) incentives: The EHR is a registration and management system for the CMS’s incentive program. This program supports eligible healthcare professionals to use electronic medical records.

Doctors, healthcare professionals, and facilities must register on the CMSwebsite to create an I&A account.

They will need to complete various sections, and some will require printing, signing, and mailing, along with any additional required materials to a CMS-contracted Medicare fee-for-service contractor or Medicare administrative contractor.

The contractor will then process the form and all supporting materials and decide how to progress enrollment status.

In the past, doctors, healthcare professionals, and healthcare facilities had to register with multiple Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) systems to access up-to-date Medicare enrollments and reimbursements.

The Identity and Access (I&A) system simplifies this process.

Doctors, healthcare professionals, and organizations simply now log in to one system where they can complete all of their Medicare tasks in one place.
