There is no evidence that any essential oil can treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in humans. However, some people find that aromatherapy helps relieve stress, which can contribute to ED.

Other natural approaches, such as dietary changes, exercise, and weight management, have much more evidence to support them.

ED can sometimes be a sign of a more serious underlying condition, such as diabetes or heart disease. Anyone experiencing ED but is unsure why needs to speak with a doctor.

This article will discuss the use of essential oils in treating ED.

A note about sex and gender

Sex and gender exist on spectrums. This article will use the terms “male,” “female,” or both to refer to sex assigned at birth. Learn more.

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. Currently, no strong evidence suggests they can directly treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in humans.

The research that exists generally focuses on rodents instead of humans and has involved injecting essential oils directly into the penis, which is potentially dangerous.

For example, one study tested clove oil in rats, while another tested cinnamon oil in rats and surgically-removed human penis tissue in a laboratory. The essential oils, or their main compounds, appeared to improve erectile function in both studies.

However, this does not mean this approach will work for humans. Essential oils that get into the bloodstream may affect other parts of the body and can interact with other conditions or medications. In some cases, they can be toxic.

Much more research is necessary to determine whether essential oils have any utility for treating ED in humans and whether they are safe.

Similarly, there is no evidence that carrier oils, including coconut and castor oil, help with ED.

Some people enjoy using essential oils for relaxation and stress relief. Stress can also be a factor in ED.

In a self-report survey, 61% of the respondents said they felt that stress or mental health conditions played a role in their ED.

If stress is the main cause, essential oils could play a role in stress reduction. Some people find it helpful to diffuse them into the air, inhale them, or use them topically in massage.

So far, though, there are no studies that have tested if these techniques help with ED specifically. Essential oils also carry some risks.

For example, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) states there is some evidence that certain oils, such as lavender and tea tree, may increase levels of estrogen and reduce male sex hormones over time.

It is also unsafe to use oils, such as carrier oils, around latex condoms. Oils make them less effective and can break them.

Oils that come from citrus fruits can increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV light when a person applies them topically, and any oil can potentially cause skin rashes or allergic reactions.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate essential oils, so there is often no guarantee that they are free from impurities or toxins.

People need to use them with a high degree of caution and only in consultation with a doctor or healthcare professional.

Other natural approaches to ED are generally safe, effective, and have additional health benefits.

Depending on a person’s situation, a doctor may recommend the following.

Dietary changes

A nutritious diet can improve ED symptoms and may also help prevent ED. A 2020 study found an association between a balanced diet and lower rates of ED in over 21,400 men.

Those who adhered more closely to the Mediterranean diet or another diet known as the Alternative Healthy Eating Index 2010 diet were less likely to develop ED.

Both of these diets focus on:

  • fruits and vegetables
  • legumes
  • whole grains
  • nuts and seeds
  • lean proteins, such as fish
  • low amounts of processed or red meats

Exercise

A 2023 review and meta-analysis of past research found that regular aerobic exercise can improve erectile function. Those with lower scores on erectile function saw the biggest benefits.

In a 2023 survey, respondents rated exercise as the most effective lifestyle change for helping their ED. Of the respondents, 72.9% said that this type of exercise led to either moderate or significant improvements in their symptoms, while 80.4% had the same opinion on weight training.

Weight management

A 2021 review of previous randomized controlled trials found that weight loss may improve erectile function in males with ED and obesity.

Diet and exercise can play a role in weight management.

ED has a range of potential causes, some of which are serious or require more specialized treatment.

If a person has not already done so, they can speak with a doctor about their ED. This will allow the doctor to rule out serious causes and recommend what treatments are most likely to help.

There are no studies to demonstrate that essential oils can effectively treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in humans. As ED can occur for many reasons, it is best to speak with a doctor about this symptom.

They may be able to find an underlying cause and recommend treatments that will help. In some people, this could prevent ED from occurring again.

Other natural approaches to ED include dietary changes, exercise, and weight management. Some people may find essential oils help with relaxation, which could potentially also help. However, it is vital to use them safely.

Anyone considering using essential oils for ED needs to speak with a doctor or certified aromatherapist first.
